Cracks Happen

Cracks Happen 2014

I was making my first plate in ceramic and (un)fortunately it cracked during the drying process.
This reminded me of the Kintsugi or Kintsukuroi, the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with lacquer resin dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.
As a philosophy it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise therefore I decided to hand-paint a sort of circular branch following the cracks of the surface.
The ‘‘flaw’’ became the ‘‘virtue’’ of the object.
